How do five friends disappear after a basketball game, only for their car to be discovered abandoned high in the mountains, miles from where they should have been?
On February 24, 1978, five men from the Yuba City–Marysville area of California traveled to Chico to attend a college basketball game. Afterward, they stopped at a convenience store for snacks before heading home.
But the five men never returned.
Four days later, their turquoise-and-white 1969 Mercury Montego was discovered abandoned along a remote mountain road, far from their expected route. The car was operable. There was gasoline in the tank. And there was no clear explanation for why the men had left it behind.
As search teams battled freezing temperatures and deep snow, the mystery only grew darker. Months later, investigators discovered a Forest Service trailer containing evidence that suggested at least one of the missing men had survived far longer than anyone initially realized.
Eventually, the remains of four men were recovered. But the fifth, Gary Mathias, was never found.
