Welcome back to Film Haven Reivews!! This week is VERY special because we are starting a whole new segment on the podcast called "Movie Club" where I bring on two of my closest friends (Macy and Emily) to talk about some of the movies we see, usually in Oscar Season preparation!! This week we are starting off with the EXCELLENT Chloe Zhao film Hamnet (2025) which we all scored highly (two 9s and a 10/10!). We loved the layered conceptual story about grief and how it effects everyone differently, as well as the creative cinematography, and the perfect acting from the entire cast. This one feels pretty special, we can only hope it will nab a couple wins at the Oscars next year!  You can also go to find the video on my NEW youtube page: https://www.youtube.com/@filmhavenreviewsÂ

Episode 135: The Killer (1989)
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are sadly concluding out "John Woo Gun Fu: Origins" theme with the highly rated The Killer (1989).Chow Yun-Fat is at it again and this film feels like a good balance between the story focused A Better Tomorrow (1986) and the action blowout Hard Boiled (1992). There are certainly some great (and even legendary) action secquences in this film, but you also care alot more for the characters' motivations and, importantly, what happens to them in the story. I gave this film an 8.5/10 for having the best balance in this theme with the only downside being that it dragged a bit in the middle.  For my full written review feel free to follow my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/film_haven_reviews/You can also go to find the video on my NEW youtube page: https://www.youtube.com/@filmhavenreviewsÂ

Episode 134: Hard Boiled (1992)
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!! This week we are continuing our John Woo Gun Fu: Origins theme with the classic action extravaganza Hard Boiled (1992). This movie was just as action packed as I expected and maybe even more so. I watched this movie with my buddy Landon and we were blown away by the pure volume of action set peices and crazy choreography that was pulled off in this film. I gave this an 8.5/10 for delivering a decent story, incredible action, and some great wacky moments too. I cannot recommend this film enough!  For my full written review feel free to follow my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/film_haven_reviews/You can also go to find the video on my NEW youtube page: https://www.youtube.com/@filmhavenreviews Â

Episode 133: A Better Tomorrow (1986)
Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are starting a brand new theme of "John Woo Gun Fu: Origins" with the mega famous and culturally impactful A Better Tomorrow (1986). This film is massively important to Hong Kong cinema and I had no idea before watching it but I can totally see why now! Its got high drama, effective characters, and amazing action. What's not to like??? I gave this an 8.5/10 for everything I just described plus the incredible score and cinematography. Would definitley recommend!!! For my full written review feel free to follow my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/film_haven_reviews/You can also go to find the video on my NEW youtube page: https://www.youtube.com/@filmhavenreviews Â

SPECIAL EPISODE: Frankenstein (2025) w/ Geoff Bretches
Welcome back to this VERY special episode of Film Haven Reviews!! This week we are discussing Guillerlmo Del Toro's newest adaptation of Frankenstein (2025)!! We are also being joined by an incredibly special guest; my buddy Geoff Bretches who knows all things Gothic AND Occult which comes in handy when talking about this story that is so rooted in both! This is one of those novels that really changed my entire experience with Gothic Literature and so every adapation lends itself to incredible insight and limitless discussion. This movie is no different! Del Toro managed to stay true to the source material (and the 1931 film) while also blazing a new path himself, making a particularly fruitful and vivacious adapation that Geoff had a blast picking apart and analyzing. If you haven't seen the film yet, go to Netflix and watch it RIGHT AWAY!!! Otherwise, enjoy this amazing conversation!! If you want to see more content from Geoff here are some of the places he is at! I highly recommend reading his substack! Substack:https://substack.com/@geoffbretches?utm_source=explore_sidebarInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/geoffdb_?igsh=MW11OWFhNmdhaG5yaA==
