Sound Bath Sessions 174: Liane Mah, Walter Chan, Grace Chen
It was still a warm December when we met again for her last session. Grace brought along Walter who was going to be a part of the session. We took the ferry to meet Liane in Mui Wo at Ning's Yard, the spiritual retreat center she renovated, a short walk from the pier.
In this solemn track, Liane and Walter begin with a flute and ocean drum. Grace uses her voice to hold long notes to the extent of her lungs, trembling to sustain them, sometimes morphing into overtone singing. The stark thumps of the ocean drum awaken the imagination. At its climax, a helicopter rips the sky open leaving only the drum bold enough to accompany it, then quickly disappears as if it were a dream, right on cue.
Wonderfully layered, minimal, and unfinished- but complete.

Sound Bath Sessions 141: Haruka Hikita
Haruka mainly played metal bowls and a few other instruments in this session. She uses her voice to chant in melodic tongues. The tone and quality of her voice match all her instruments, like they were made for each other. Playing slowly with intention, she plays only the notes she needs. Her sessions feel deeply personal, unalloyed, and free.
She starts this session with a flute that sounded like her voice. Her breath was so steady, pure and unwavering. She sings with the bowls, mimicking their pitch and sustain by holding the note as long as possible until she disappears.

Generations- Shanghai Ferry 闵行渡口/西渡渡口
This track is part of a collection of recordings that documented all the ferry boat crossings in Shanghai in 2021. The recordings were used in the Vital performance showcase in Shanghai at the Rockbund Museum in November 2021.
Documenting the ferry lines in Shanghai was on my wish list for a long time and I was happy that I finally had a reason to do it. Over the span of one month, I went to the 16 ferry ports and made a round trip. I documented the areas around the ports and other interesting sounds that I heard.
I used the recordings and recorded it onto reels of tape with my Generations instrument consisting of 4 Revox A77 tape recorders. Before the performance, I spliced and re-recorded the audio over several days to create interesting, pre-recorded reels to play during the concert. During the performance, I manipulated the reels with my fingers while controlling the recorders via MIDI to make a sound collage of the Shanghai ferry.
The final track in this collection is the live recording of my improvised performance at the Vital concert.
